August 2018
After proudly serving the communities of Alameda and Contra Costa Counties for over 46 years, the Thomas J. Long Foundation has allocated the remainder of its grantmaking funds as of June 2018.
For decades, the Long Foundation provided support to hundreds of direct service, community-based organizations serving the greater Bay Area and Hawaii. In 2014, Trustees of the Long Foundation strategically shifted its grantmaking focus to fund larger, multi-year investments for deeper impact in a more targeted geographic scope. During this spend down phase, the Long Foundation launched over 25 strategic initiatives across its four program areas: Education, Disability Services, Senior Services, and the Safety Net, including numerous supporting grants and discretionary giving opportunities in Alameda and Contra Costa Counties. In total, the Long Foundation has given over $128M to over 650 organizations, with $79M of that granted in the last four years of its spend down process.
From the Long Foundation’s humble beginnings in 1972 to the present day, it has been a pleasure to support the wonderful non-profits and people who have dedicated their careers to improving the lives of others. We have learned so much from all of you and have been inspired by your vision, passion, and persistence. Your steadfast commitment has embodied the “tradition of caring” that was the hallmark of Long’s Drugs Stores throughout its lifespan.
We wish you continued success in your work and hope that our investments will help to ensure that Alameda and Contra Costa Counties remain healthy, diverse, vibrant, and caring communities where all residents have the opportunity to thrive.
Sincerely,
Mark Friedman, CEO
